from the directors of the award- winning archive-based documentary Il Varco – Once more unto the Breach (European film Awards- Best editing 2020), a new journey into plunge Italy’s and Europe’s repressed colonial past. Un ritorno is an archival documentary exploring Italian colonialism in Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia through the lens of Fascist propaganda cinema. From early ethnographic and missionary films of the 1920s to the newsreels of the invasion of Ethiopia and the proclamation of the Empire, the project reconstructs the rise of a racist, violent, and deeply Italian colonial imagination.
